Nosebleeds
By Louise Tenney

Nosebleeds commonly occur in children and are usually serious.
The blood vessels in the front part of the nose are close to the surface and can easily be damaged and burst. Blood loss is usually minimal though it may look like a lot.
Keep the child in a sitting position or with head raised. Hold tie under the nostrils.
The nose can be pinched for a few minutes.
The child may be frightened by the sight of blood so reassure and comfort them.
Healing will occur quickly, usually within a week.

Nosebleed

Causes
A nosebleed can be caused by an injury to the nose.
A fall off a bike or fight with a friend can cause the problem.
It can be painful.
Allergies can cause swelling in the nasal passages, making them more susceptible to bleeding.
Some children will wake up with blood on their pillow, sheets and clothing. A lack of humidity may cause the nasal membranes to crack and bleed.
Children with serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure, hemophilia and leukemia may be more susceptible, so ask a medical professional for advice.

Home Care

• Have the child sit up or lie down with the head raised.
• Tilt the head forward.
• Have the child breathe through the mouth. Apply pressure with a finger and thumb to the bridge of the nose, allowing a clot to form. Do this for five to ten minutes, and check to see if the bleeding has stopped.
• If bleeding continues after thirty minutes, seek medical assistance
• An ice pack can be applied to the bridge of the nose to constrict the blood vessels and control the bleeding.
• Tissue can be placed under the nose to catch the blood.
• Reassure the child. They may be frightened by the sight of the blood.
• Use a humidifier if the air is dry.
• One teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of pure water can help stop a nosebleed.

Dietary Guidelines

After the bleeding stops, fluids can be given.
